Conditions not covered by Disability Support Services

We regularly receive referrals that don’t qualify for disability support funded by DSS. To help guide referrals, here are ten conditions that on their own usually don’t qualify.

If someone has one of these conditions, as well as disabilities that meet DSS criteria, they are welcome to send a referral.

  • Auditory processing disorder
  • Dementia
  • Disabilities caused by an accident
  • Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
  • Learning challenges like Developmental Coordination Disorder (dyspraxia), dyslexia and dyscalculia
  • Long term health conditions that cause disability, like epilepsy, diabetes, heart disease or respiratory conditions
  • Mental health conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, anxiety, schizophrenia and addictions
  • Palliative conditions
  • Post-operative support
  • Speech and language conditions like stuttering and Tourette Syndrome

If you’re ever unsure, call 0800 824 5872 and ask for our Pathways Team or email info@kaikaranga.org.nz. They can help you work out whether a referral is appropriate or suggest other support options.
