Announcing Kaikaranga

An evolution of our mission

We are excited to share with you a significant milestone in our journey, a new chapter in our growth as an organisation.

Taikura Trust has been privileged to provide services for people, families and whānau for almost 24 years. Our services have grown; the NASC service grows every year, and we’ve added new services to our pātaka, our cupboard. Recognising the changing needs of those we serve, and driven by our commitment to do more, we have evolved, and the time is right to announce this change.

Welcoming Kaikaranga

Taikura Trust is not disappearing. A new entity, a fully owned subsidiary of Taikura Trust, has been established. The entity has its own Board to oversee and manage the people and services that were delivered by the Trust. The entity is called Kaikaranga.

Our new name is inspired by tikanga Māori, Māori tradition. As many of you will know, a Kaikaranga is a woman caller. Hers is the first voice to be heard when people are coming together. The caller welcomes and connects people; the caller guides people and opens the space for sharing; the caller creates new and enduring relationships.

As the people of Kaikaranga, WE embody the call. We rely on our knowledge and capability to develop offerings that people, families, and disability communities need so they can live their best lives. We rely on the strength of our relationships with you, our partners. We rely on the quality of our delivery and performance with our supporters and funders. We take none of this for granted. Even though our service has a new name, our determination is stronger than ever.

Kaikaranga is focused on delivering effective navigation and connection within the disability support system and assisting other government systems that have a role to play in enabling disabled people to live their best lives. We understand the siloed nature of systems is a barrier for people who need the support, but this can also be a barrier for the people inside those systems. When systems fail in this way the people and the needs they are intended to serve, become invisible.

We’ll use our skills and knowledge, but most importantly, we bring an outcome mindset that can flex as needs and priorities change and as the environment around us continues to change.

Why Kaikaranga? Building on the footprint of Taikura

The transition to the new entity has happened gradually over recent years and we’ve already done some things that reflect this change. Supporting people and communities and working alongside our partners during the post-Covid times and the Auckland weather events were those early examples. We hope our actions have demonstrated our mission to be a resourceful and reliable partner.

Distinguishing roles: Kaikaranga and Taikura Trust

Taikura Trust is still here in the background, supporting Kaikaranga, and pursuing its own objectives. Those objectives include supporting disability leadership and influencing system change to make Aotearoa New Zealand an inclusive and accessible society.

Taikura Trust will focus more intently on its charitable purposes, the aspirations of its founders, and giving back to communities in different ways.

Supporting people, families and whānau to safeguard their wellbeing now and for their future will be an important feature of what comes next for Taikura Trust.
